Wow! Finally the camp is over. It was a very big SUCCESS. Sec 1 campers enjoyed the camp activities and learnt good values. We must thank all the Organisers, GLs, Seniors Yeow Chong, Qiu Hui, Su Hiang, Wan Qing, Yan Ling, our teacher volunteers Mr Lee Teck Chaw, Mdm Tan Yi Hui and all Lovely Sec 1 campers. Without your hardwork and the full participation, we will not have such a successful camp.

We would like to thank SBM Youth for lending us the well-loved Nerf guns and Zeming for lending us his camera. Of course, not forgetting the guidance they gave to our members. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Finally, our well-planned and fun-filled GL Camp was over. Let's revisit the happy moments at the camp. We must thank our senior Yeow Chong, Wen Shi and Javier for planning the activities, Rayner and Wen Feng for logistics, our seniors Leona, Amanda, Yanye and Elysia for their full support in our activities, our senior Yeat Yuan for buying lollipops for us, the full cooperation of all our members, all teachers - Mrs Cheng, Mdm Tan and Mr Lee for their care and support. BIC's Outing - Marina Barrage

Today is our BIC outing after the intensive training for Vesak Celebration. We went to Marina Barrage today. Unfortunately the gallery was closed for maintenance, we could not view the exhibits. However, we still had a lot of fun flying kites, play frisbee, blowing bubbles, eating the delicious fried rice and fried bee hoon prepared by Sec two Si Yun's mother, the hotdogs, sandwiches prepared by our Sec one members, the snacks bought by Ms Gan... yummy yummy... and the drinks brought by our Sec three members.

We discovered many skilful kite flyers - Hazel, Benjamin, Elisia, Jia Hui, Amandha, Tan Jia Hui, Liwei, Mr Lee, Kaiwen, Willis, ... etc, etc. Flying kite seemed to be as easy as ABC for Hazel. She could sit on the floor to control her kite high up in the sky. We took turn to fly her kite to gain some sense of achievement...haha...

Mr Gui and Mdm Tay brought their daughter there too.

What a wonderful day! Thanks to the blessings that we have, it didn't rain!

The Amazing Kidney Race is an outdoor educational event organised by Kidney Dialysis Foundation and Nee Soon South Community Club. Participants are to overcome obstacles at various game stations all around the neighborhood of Nee Soon South to earn points to win the Race.

With the aim to increase awareness about kidney health to the public, the games will revolve around educational messages such as the functions of kidneys, kidney related diseases and good practices to maintain healthy kidneys.

The cost of participation in the games is fully sponsored and you'll get to win CIP points.

Hi Guys and Girls!

Hopefully you all have received a good break and rest over the weekends, and are able to complete all your homeworks for this coming weeks!

I bet you guys would have still remembered Camp Eagles 2010? Honestly, i've seen some of your facebook profile messages about the camp and to say, i'm really happy you guys feel that way, at least we instructors know that the efforts put into this camp is totally not wasted at all!

Please also do remember and appreciate certain learning points, this includes the following:
- Leadership is about communicating with one another
- Leadership is also about patience while communicating and working with your team
- Leadership is taking the initiative to secure projects and activities
- Leadership is ensuring that your plan works in reality
- Leadership is always being aware of your mannerisms and language.
- Leadership is about perserverance
- Leadership is about the way you treat your team, and how you take the effort to bond together
- Leadership is magical, just like the powers of an Eagle.
- Leadership is U.

So with the lessons, move on and have a great Chinese New Year Ahead!
Meanwhile, i will still be going down to BIC probably after the hectic February period to have one or two workshops with your club k?
If you have friends who are still needing to change clubs to come to BIC, please do not hesitate to invite them to your activities as and when possible, remember, taking an effort to learn about the dhamma does not need CCA points or commitments, and i'm highly sure that parents who know their children wanting to learn about the teachings of the Buddha would definitely encourage them to go for BIC.

So jia you, i believe in each and everyone of you, even those who have not been to Camp Eagles, that you know BIC is your great place of sanctuary, and that others would benefit by coming too!

Friday's CAMP EAGLES was a great success despite the fact that we have to make last minute changes to our programmes. Our members participated fully, enjoyed ourselves and learn the qualities of a good leader. Our friendship and bonding is strenthened.

It would not be possible without the efficient team from SBM - Alvin, Shi Xiong, Zeming, Victor, Fangrui, Kevin, Ernest, Pearson and Zhenyu. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to them for guiding our members to be good team leader.

A note to BIC leaders and members.

Hey guys.

As announced, we would be planning to have your Camp Eagles this coming friday at 3.30pm (giving u more time to eat and settle down before you come to the camp).

However, i would like to point out certain things that might have gone through your minds during this period of time. Why so sudden? this camp seems to be? Why is there a need for this camp? And do i need to be there?

Here are the details:

Why so sudden for this camp?

Contrary to what most of you have been thinking, i have also received reviews and suggestions for a camp for BIC to happen now, both for batches like Elysia and Hazel who would be breaking in April to concentrate on the O Levels, and also for the upcoming batch of people like Jia hui, Peijin, Amanda and Mengkuan who needs some time to come into leadership, and also before you guys breack for N Levels exams. Looking at the timeline in BIC, the only time we can have this camp - the impact camp, would be in February, before Chinese New Year.

Why is there a need for this camp?

This year, BIC achieved 1st CCA status, and as a 1st CCA standard, we need to instill a form of leadership, bonding between the groups, as well as really getting to know one another in BIC. Also, as the secondary ones are just in and the secondary two members are still relatively new, we felt it is a good time to prepare this camp for you guys, so that you guys no need to do the planning, and we, TEAM SBM, would assist you all in this camp.

This camp is also to give u some skills in tackling with day-to-day BIC activities, as well as IT techniques such as how to post a good blog, and how to really be able to stand up as a leader of BIC, the basic mannerisms as a leaders, what to avoid, and what to achieve as a leader.
You will be put into different situations to test your ability to comprehend and cooperate with your team mates, who are your BIC team members.

Who is doing this camp for you?

The people behind this camp are also the people behind the games in Camp Ehi-Passiko and Camp Lions. Please do also take note that as this is a special camp and it happens on a Friday, some of us are actually taking time out of our usual activities like school and uni studies just to help and assist in planning this camp. That explains also the reason why i say that this camp is one of a kind, and that different numbers of people will be putting different types of energy and effort into the camp, and we really hope that you can appreciate the efforts thus far by coming together as a team, rather than not coming due to personal reasons, for i would like to stress that this camp is only once a year, and should u have difficulties coming to camp, and if you need help such as financial assistance, please do not hesitate to approach me and Mrs Cheng to talk about it.

As a leader, please also remember about responsibility and accountability in BIC. we will also try to instill this in to you during this camp, and hope that you guys have values which u all can take back with you.
The other reason why it is Friday-Saturday and not Saturday-Sunday is basically due to the fact that we would love to have you enjoy your Saturday afternoons (camp finishes at 11am) and Sunday to rest, relax, and probably catch up on your homework.

Thats why i can double re-assure you that we have your interests at heart when we have this camp. Personally, i would be a bit sad (haha) or even disappointed if major members, especially those who have gone for Camp Lions and Camp Ehi Passiko, are not around. Thus, i really hope to see you there, cos Camp Eagles, is for BIC, and is a camp that can rival uniformed groups anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

Please do consider this factors before coming to the camp, and if you would like to know who is in charge this Friday for your activities, they are:

This Friday is a very important day for most of the BIC members, because it is the first time such a leadership camp has been made and created for the sole purpose of bonding you together, and standing up as Buddhist leaders of tomorrow.

For your information, here are the relevant details:

Time: 1500 - 1530 hours (registration and settle down)

Venue: MJR Secondary School

Attire: Get Ready for Activities! (PE Shirt, Shorts and Shoes)

Mrs Cheng would have issued you the consent form and the pack list, so get yourself ready and be sure to bring whatever you can for the camp, so that you feel comfortable during rest and relax. Please do try to get everyone to come as we don't do this every 6 months, being every year only once, and i really hope you guys would open your minds to the values you will be able to learn through this camp!

BIC will be organising an Internal Donation Drive to support Buddhist Tzu Chi's Humanitarian aids given to Haiti Earthquake Victims.

You have been working very hard to nurture our Sec 1 students and it is now for us to nurture and enhance your leadership skills. Remember, the aim of BIC is to nurture Compassionate and Responsible Buddhist Youth Leaders. A parents' consent form will be issued to you next week.

Dear members,

We have a few important announcements here:

BIC will be made the first CCA next year (Yeah! Yan Ye has announced the news earlier than us.). This means that we will be able to recruit new members at the CCA exhibition.

We have a few important and big missions next year. As such, we need to meet next week to work out the framework. Please meet at the IT Learning Room 1 on Monday (9 Nov, 2 to 3 pm), Thursday (12 Nov, 2 to 3 pm) and Friday (13 Nov, 1 to 2.30pm).

BIC will not achieve its status without our committed members, seniors and friends who spent a lot of time and effort in every event that we carried out. We hope to turn BIC into the training ground of Bodhisattvas who helps the needy people. All of us must try our best to improve ourselves and give positive influence to all the people we meet. We have the power to bring out harmony and happiness!

For those who have not signed up for SBM camp, please do so ASAP. This is a fun and nurturing camp. Do not miss it!

CCA Open House 28 Oct 2009

Amanda, Mengkuan, Wen Shi, Regine and Elysia spent the whole afternoon on Thursday, 22 Oct, to do up the noticeboard and finally CCA Open House was held successfully on 28 Oct 2009. Due to the Sec 3 NA Elective Programmes and Lower Sec post-exam activities, only Elysia, Wen Shi and Regine volunteered to help out on the actual day. The three of them formed a very strong team and presented BIC activities rto 150 Maha Bodhi and Eunos Primary School students. Well done, Elysia, Wen Shi and Regine! You can see their hard work in the photos below.

Testing the projection on the wall Despite our testing and checking, the system failed - First, the computer suddenly shut down just before we received our first group of visitors -due to low battery power (a power socket has problem, we were not awared that it was run on battery). Next we managed to get a multiplug from Mr Ng, but it caused the project to shut down and took some time for it to light up again. All of us started serving the Buddhist community with great aspirations, but why do some of us end up feeling frustrated, angered and helpless when differences arise within our community?

If such issues are not managed properly, negative feelings towards others arise. Worse still, we might lose sight of our initial goal and our faith in the Triple Gem can be shaken.

Facilitated by Brother Zenon Teh, this interactive workshop helps you to process these issues and seek solutions, while strengthening your confidence in the practice of the Buddha-Dharma.

About the Facilitator
Zenon Teh has been curious about the truth of the universe and purpose of living since young. Brought up in Catholic schools, he was engaged in Christianity. After he came into contact with the Buddha-Dharma in the early 1980s, he took refuge from Sakyapa Tibetan gurus. In the mid '90s, he learnt about the Pureland Teachings and embraced Amitabha Buddha recitation, seeing the aspiration to be born in the Pureland as his highest goal in life.

Mercy Relief Flag Day 18-10-2009 and Meeting on 22 Oct 2009

Elysia, Hazel, Wen Shi and Xinti have contributed their effort to help Mercy Relief to raise funds for the Victims of the Typhoon Ketsana and South Sumatra Earthquake.

By participating in the flag day, not only did they help to save lives of the needy, the act of collecting donation also gave opportunities for the public to do good deeds and gain merits.

Remember the saying: 勿以善小而不为，勿以恶小而为之。

(Do not dismiss a good deed, no matter how small it is. Do not commit a bad deed, no matter how small it is.)

They are indeed good role models of BIC!

Venerable Sayadaw U Sejjanalankara is the Chief Abbot of the Dhammasukha Monastery in Los Angeles , USA . He holds the title of Dvipitakadhara, i.e. he memorised, studied and passed the exams of Dvipitaka - Vinaya Pitaka & Suttanta Pitaka. In addition to obtaining his Sasanadhajasiripavara Dhammacariya degree, he memorised five volumes of the Vinaya and passed his Vinayadhara exams when he was still a samanera. He had also undertaken intensive meditation in the Mahasi Meditation Centre from 1973 and also learnt anapanasati under other teachers. Our school celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival cum Hari Raya Celebration yesterday evening. It was organised by the Chinese Department. As requested by Mr Ng, our members Mengkuan, Amanda, Wen Shi, Regine, Hazel, Elysia and new members Daryl, Wen Feng, Javier and their friend Clive volunteered to help to man the booths and attend to our guests from Handicaps Association. Buddha Collapsed is set in Bamian, a small historic town in Afganistan ravaged by the Taliban's bloody rule. The violence has led to a complete destruction of precious historical and cultural relics, including the dynamiting of two priceless Buddha statues each over 100 feet tall that were carved into the Bamian cliffs 2,000 years ago. The tragic emptiness of the cliff openings' void where the statues used to preside serves as a backdrop for the most climactic and violent scenes of the film.

The story is a reflection of war and the seemingly unbreakable cycle of violence in children. Baktay (Nikbakht Noruz)—the main character, is a little girl in Bamian, who is obstinately trying to go to a recently opened girls' school across the river. In the process, she has to overcome her own family's poverty, her mother's indifference, and finally face ruthless boys who take her as a victim when playing a war game. The little girl's long and arduous journey provides numerous cultural references to modern day Afghanistan, and its attempt to return to normalcy following the Taliban's rule; including poverty, illiteracy, the need for reconciliation and reintegration in society.

Since the cute little Baktay serves as the narrative guide on this journey, it is very easy for the viewers to empathize with her aspirations and disappointments, despite the very basic dialogue. The purity of the child and her struggles illustrate the very core of Afghanistan's problems and challenges, as the audience experiences first-hand the ruthlessness of the Taliban via the boys' war game.

Buddha Collapsed out of Shame: Using Kids to Discuss Adults' Shameful Acts

This is an unusual film, though not one that can be considered a major work of cinema. It gains importance because it shows how children can be used as a tool to discuss serious social and political issues. The film is about a young Afghan girl who yearns to read and write as the boys of her age. The film provides a chilling account of the Taliban’s intolerance of girls attending school, of women using lipstick and stoning of women to death for trivial reasons—all reprised through games of children imitating the disturbing adult actions.

The most valuable part of the film is that the criticism is indirect as perceived from a child's perspective. A lovely, persistent, young girl child wanting to learn to read and attend school, makes intelligent use of her mother's lipstick and four eggs taken from her home to attain her aim in life. Her mother is away, working. (I guess here shades of director Hana Makhmalbaf's personal aspirations are mirrored, though she led a much better life than the Afghan girl.) The film is a wonderful example of use of kids in world cinema. What credible performances!

The blog has not been updated for quite some time. We may need more people to post to bring more life to it. Mengkuan's suggestion is very good, thank you.
Please all meet at BIC room this Thursday (at 3 pm) at BIC room. We will have our tea session and please bring some snacks with you. We will review on this year's programmes and hope to draft out some interesting plans for future activities. All suggestions are welcome.

Hi everyone,

Finally, we will see each other again at our BIC activities. Please be punctual. Ven Chuan Guan will be with us this coming Thursday. We will also welcome Mrs Yeo-Chan Fong Yee to join our BIC family. With her around, we will be able to explore the other areas that will bring BIC to a new height. Yeah! Please bring the book "What Buddhists Believe" when you come for the session.

There will be a Video Competition again this year. Those of you who have learnt video editing please help to gather our members and think about how to make a BIC Video for this year's National Day. The details are as follows. You'll only have 2 weeks to work on it.

Mission Possible?

For this year's National Day, the NE Committee has decided to organize a Video Competition for the students. The theme of the competition will be ‘My Pledge’.

The participants will have to come up with their visual interpretation of the national pledge in a short video clip of not more than 3 minutes. It could be inspired by one sentence, a combination of sentences or the whole pledge.

Please note that unlike past years' competition, the video clips must be made using handphones or video cameras with the students involved appearing in the video clips. Sec 2 members in your CCA groups are the best people to work with in this area. They have done a video in their Semester 1 IPW project and this will be a good opportunity for them to show off their talent! Powerpoint presentations with music will no longer be acceptable. This is to allow the students more opportunities to exercise their creativity.

The competition is open to all students and not only to the CCA groups. The deadline for the competition 31st July 2009.

Hi BIC,

I feel very happy when I read BIC blog, on reflections of Amanda, Hazel and even Elysia. And indeed they make me feel so proud of all of them. Having seen and hear about their involvement in Camp Lion, BF camp, PTC as Group Leader and even YBC camp, I find that they had built up their own confidence, beside making more Dharma friends and learning more Dharma knowledge. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

It is good that you realize that there is a need for more Dharma knowledge so that you can share with your peers.

I would like to recommend two books for beginners: “What Buddhist Believe” by Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda and the other book is “Be a Lamp upon yourself”, a free distribution by Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery.

Elysia's Reflection on PTF Camp

Through this camp I realised that being a group leader is tiring but fun. At times we needed to pacify the kids, yeah it’s tiring but in the end we had so much fun with them. I also realised that we cannot pamper the kids too much, if not they cannot grow, mature and learn.

It’s really fun when I played with them; I felt that I was of the same age as them! However as a group leader I had an extra duty which was to look after them and make sure they didn’t get into any mischief or trouble. They, as any other kids, were really mischievous and playful. Hence they liked to climb around in the bunk, so we had to make sure they that didn’t fall or hurt themselves.

I felt really nice and comfortable being with them. They treated me like their friends. They shared their secret book with me. However, they lied to me, the secret book was just a page of drawing, and in the end we laughed and laughed and had so much fun. Being with them made me feel relaxed and comfortable.

Everyday with them was fun! But at the end of every day I got real tired. But this gave me a good night sleep. Thank you Mrs Cheng and SBM for giving BIC so many opportunities to lead and gain new experience. I want to thank the campers too. Lastly, I love this camp!

Hazel's Reflection on PTF Camp

Throughout the camp, I have observed that there are many different ways to look after a kid. Many differ according to their personalities. For example, kids who are way too hyperactive will not listen to you if you go soft on them, instead, you have to be firm and make your stand. Kids who are more pampered and mild must be spoken to in a soft and calming way. I also learnt that you need to pay utmost attention to the kids you are looking after or they will definitely get into mischief. Overall, I believe the kids had fun and many could not bear to leave on the last day. It was heart warming when the kids ran to me and gave me a big hug and said ' You are my big sis.' It definitely made my day and all the hard work paid off.

I spent most of the time in the camp looking after a 6 year old girl named Celeste. She was a group member in my group and so being the youngest member in the camp, I placed more attention on her to make sure she was okay, eventually, the kids in the camp took the role of big sisters and big brothers to look after Celeste. It was another heart warming experience. Little Celeste was definitely adorable and she made me her best friend. The sense of achievement is indescribable. I attended the camp feeling sceptical. I was unsure if I could handle the kids especially because I felt that I would not have the patience. As the days progressed, I realise I could actually manage the kids and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Now that the camp is over, the children's names would occasionally pop out in my head. Their innocence and intelligence has truly touched me. If I have a chance, I would love to work with children more often in future.

Lastly to sum up, I think this camp has been a great learning experience to all BIC members. It was not easy taking charge of playful young kids. However, I definitely loved the time spent with the kids and would love to do it again. I believe the BIC members had an eye-opener and now understand more about dealing with children. Mrs Cheng, thank you for giving us this opportunity.

This is an unusual June holidays. Our members have done BIC proud. They participated enthusiastically in the LIONS Camp and showed their leadership in PTF Camp. We have 5 members attended LIONS Camp, 6 members went for PTF Camp, 2 members participated in YBC Camp and 1 member joined BF Camp. Amanda wrote a very good reflections on what she learnt from the camps she attended. The others' reflections are on the way.

I am glad to see that many of you felt inadequate in the knowledge of the Dharma. This is true, but it is not true that you know nothing about it. All the BIC sessions are conducted with underlying Buddhist principles. We learnt to love and care for ourselves and others - this are loving-kindness and compassion. We feel happy for our friends who excelled in different fields - this is Appreciative Joy. We are taught to let go of the negative emotions and learnt to manage stress - this is Equanimity. These are the FOUR IMMEASURABLES - we will gain immeasurable merits if we take good care of our thoughts, our speech and our actions. We are taught not to kill, not to steal but to be responsible for our acts and not to shout at or speak harshly to people around us - these are the precepts that all Buddhists should observe. Although you may not know the actual Buddhist terms, you are all taught important Buddhist values and most importantly - you are already practising them. This makes me feel very proud of you.!

Now that you are ready, let's go for proper Dharma lessons. Cheers!

(2) Metta Welfare Association is a charitable organisation that provide care services for the elderly and disabled and special education for students with special needs. (The sandwiches that we ate on the way for Vesak rehearsal was bought from the cafeteria at Metta School).

They are organising a Charity walk on 7 June 09 to raise fund for their activities. Many volunteers are needed for Metta Charity Walk in the following areas:

Second Session (15 May 09)

We are so happy to see Mr Ng come to join us today, what a great surprise!

Today, we started with a 10 to 15 minutes meditation with Ven Chuan Guan. Then Ven Ding Rong taught us that we cannot avoid stress but we can learn to manage it. We watched a video clip and had a discussion on it. The session ended with another meditation. We enjoyed the bliss of it, feeling refreshed and relaxed at the end of the session.

> Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association appeals to you and your school to join us in our fight against drug abuse. We are pleased to hold the SANA Flag Day 2009 on the 27th June (Saturday), in conjunction with the International Day Against Drug Abuse, which falls on the 26th June. There will be anti-drug campaigns running from 29th June to 3rd July, thus it will prove to be a meaningful event should your school wishes to participate with us.

Students' Heart Corner Programme

We had our first session of Students' Heart Corner Programme. The response was good. The participating students learnt how to cope with stress, how to be self-aware and how to better understand one-another. It was very interesting when we described our mood with diagram and it was fascinating that different people can interpret differently. All students participants felt understood and were more relaxed than when they came in. See you next Friday. We have more interesting programmes ahead....
